The Fishery: The Conejos is a beautiful river in the San Juan Mountains that is not floatable via drift boat or raft. The most plentiful fish in the river are small to large brown trout. Some rainbows and Rio Grande Cutts can be had as well. Public water and private (Rocky Mountain Angling Club) will be fished 30 to 45 minutes drive from the lodge.

Flies: The Conejos is one of three western rivers where many species of stonefly are found. In August, the river will be relatively low. We will be fishing dries and dry droppers with some indicator nymphing and possible streamers. Recommended flies include: Hoppers, Chubby Chernobyl, #10-20 RS-2, #18-20 Rainbow Warrior, #14 Elk Hair Caddis, #6-16 Black Hare’s Ear Nymph, San Juan or Squirmy worms patterns in burgundy, and #6-12 dark wooly buggers. The river is loaded with numerous drake species but they may have hatched by the time of our trip.

Misc: Anglers to provide own gear or arranged with the trip lead. Expect unpredictable weather. Dress in layers. Rods 5wt to 6 wt., Tippets 4X to 5X. Bring waders and boots, wading staff, polarized sun glasses, hat and rain gear.

Intermediate to advanced skill level required.

This is a walk-wade stream fishing trip, covering a mile or two from the vehicle. Reasonable casting ability will be needed to place dry-dropper rigs.
